Linkin Park rapper Mike Shinoda has spent the last six months raising funds for tsunami victims, designing a line of DC shoes, co-authoring a book and establishing a scholarship at his alma mater, the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. And what did he do in his off time? Not much. He only recorded a solo album.
While backstage at last month's Music for Relief: Rebuilding South Asia concert, the workhorse MC/producer told MTV News that he's been keeping busy with a hip-hop-tinged side project that he hopes won't offend Linkin Park's guitar-lovin' fanbase.
"It's not straight hip-hop, but it's not rock at all. For our fans who only like the rock side of Linkin Park, I hope you enjoy it, but you never know," he said. "I am playing every instrument on there, but it's not really about me. I'm featuring a lot of great MCs that are friends of mine. I want to work with people that I'm friends with, that I get along with. I'm not just going to go out there and grab whoever's hot at the moment."
Shinoda said that Common and the Roots' Black Thought are just two of the MCs on the album, which at the moment has no release date or working title. But he did explain that he is producing every track on the disc, and to complement the A-list talent he's lined up, he's been burning the midnight oil to make sure the beats are up to snuff.
"I'm trying to get the music up to what we want it to be. It's pressure, because I'm producing it," he laughed. "I want to connect with people I see eye-to-eye with, and make great music. Like I said, it's not really about me."

Nick Carter was arrested in Southern California on Saturday for allegedly driving while under the influence.
The Backstreet Boys singer was stopped by police at about 7:30 pm in downtown Huntington Beach for violating a traffic law, Lieutenant Dave Bunetta said on Monday (March 7). The officers then conducted field sobriety tests and arrested the 25-year-old.
Carter was taken to the local police department, booked for investigation of DUI and had his vehicle impounded. He was released about four hours later with an agreement to appear in court within 45 days.
Because the investigation is still active, Bunetta could not release other details about the arrest or Carter's sobriety tests. "He was cooperative, and there was nothing unusual about his demeanor," Bunetta said.
A district attorney will determine within the next few weeks if there is enough evidence to file charges.
"Nick Carter deeply regrets the current situation," the singer's publicist said in a statement released Monday. "He is on doctor-prescribed medication and was unaware of its interaction possibilities."
The Backstreet Boys recently finished recording their first album in five years and will hit the road later this month to start promoting the music.

Singapore - She sings, writes songs and plays the piano, drums and guitar, while also asserting an extreme distaste for lip-synching acts.
Hailing from Napanee, Ontario, Canada, 21-year-old Avril Lavigne will be traveling half the world to rock across South-East Asia on The Bonez Tour come early April 2005.
With a trademark rambunctious attitude framed by a foot-stampingly infectious voice, Avril’s 2002 debut album Let Go sold 14 million albums worldwide and brought global recognition to this new pop figure of teenage empowerment. Eight Grammy nominations later, the young rocker recharges her presence in the music scene with Under My Skin in 2004.
Avril’s sophomore album is a release of pure collaborative chemistry with fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk as both artists sat down to write after a lunch-date-turned-bonding-session.
"We got together one night and all of a sudden we had a song," Avril recalls. "No one knew what I was up to, not my management, not my label. We did that for two weeks and wrote 12 songs."
Soon, Avril had shifted into Chantal and her husband Raine Maida's Malibu house to record, creating a laudable collection of tracks in the resultant album Under My Skin.
"I grew up so much in the past two years," admits Avril who was voted Favorite Female Artist at 2003's MTV Asia Awards. "I've been through a lot, I've learned a lot, and experienced a lot both good and bad. These songs are about all of that, and each is very personal to me."
Retaining her signature style of willful audacity and charming insolence in songs like "Take Me Away," "Together," and “Don’t Tell Me,” Avril also ignites her listeners with darker tracks such as “Forgotten” and “Nobody’s Home,” which goes to show her growing artistic maturity.
So be sure to catch all the head-banging exhilaration Avril has to offer at the Bonez Tour this April!

Singapore - On the road since 2002, punk pop superstars Simple Plan will be crossing continents this year, with Singapore assured a good dose of their notoriously exciting live shows.
Named after the Billy Bob Thornton movie, Simple Plan are a five-piece band from Montreal, Canada, comprising of high school pals Pierre Bouvier (vocals) Jeff Stinco (lead guitar), David Desrosiers (bass) Sebastien Lefebvre (guitar) and Chuck Comeau(drums).
Amongst their many accolades, Simple Plan were recently voted the Favourite Pop Act at the MTV Asia Awards 2005 and their success can be attributed to the band's songwriting savvy-ness, dedication to their fans and an overwhelming work ethic.
Taking the 'pop punk' genre by storm with their debut album No Pads, No Helmets, ... Just Balls, the band have been touring non-stop, with a knack for singing the opinions of the underdog teen combined with genuine charm and boisterous behaviour befitting a chart-topping band.
Their Top-10 hits include up-tempo tracks "Addicted," "I'd Do Anything", "I'm Just A Kid" and the mega ballad "Perfect."
The much anticipated second album, Still Not Getting Any... was recorded in their hometown with famed producer Bob Rock who is best known for his work with Metallica, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi and the Cult. Rock traveled to Montreal to record the band in their native surroundings, in order to stay true to their signature sound.
In Singapore, the first single "Welcome To My Life" was No. 1 for three weeks on Perfect Ten 98.7FM and the album, Still Not Getting Any... has already achieved a GOLD certification.
"The record is a bit different from the first one, but it's still us," Lefebvre is quick to point out on the second album. However, although Simple Plan are open to experimenting with the formula that made them famous, their biggest concern is not letting down their fans, because they are who this album is for.
"The connection, ultimately between us and our fans, is the most important thing we have," explains Desrosiers. "They are the ones who make or break our album, not some music critic who's already made his or her mind up about us," Stinco adds. "Without them, I would probably be working a nine-to-five job that I hate."
Apart from their Jakarta and Singapore dates, Simple Plan will also headline Bangkok (March 27), Kuala Lumpur (March 29) and Manila (March 31) with fellow Canadian pop-rock artist Avril Lavigne, voted Favourite Female Artist at the recent MTV Asia Awards.

BEVERLY HILLS, California - Backstreet Boys fans determined to find out details about the group's comeback might have "Incomplete" information.
Since some radio stations began playing a leaked song called "Incomplete" last month, many have assumed it's the first single from the group's as-yet-untitled new album, but that may not be the case.
While participating in various Grammy-related events recently, the Backstreet Boys revealed they are still deciding between "Incomplete," "I Still" and "Weird World," written by Five For Fighting's John Ondrasik.
Fans will find out March 18, when the single will be officially released to radio stations. "Whatever it is, it's going to shock you," Nick Carter promised.
The group finished recording last month and is now narrowing down a list of 43 completed tracks to the 15 or so that'll make the album.
"It's going to be a hard process, but I think we have our favorites," Howie Dorough said.
"The [best songs] reveal themselves," Kevin Richardson said. "You just kind of keep cutting and the cream rises to the top. All we wanted to do on this record is explore — we recorded some heavy urban R&B tracks, we recorded some kinda heavy rock tracks, and we kind of found a place in the middle."
The Backstreet Boys worked with Boyz II Men, a cappella masters Take 6 and former Savage Garden singer Darren Hayes, as well as producers the Underdogs, John Shanks, Billy Mann and veteran teen-pop songsmith Max Martin.
"Max is actually the one that kind of made us shift and turn from going more urban and R&B more towards the [rock]," A.J. McLean said.
"Our whole album, we feel like this time, has a more organic sound," Richardson added. "We have more live instrumentation than in the past albums. We're using a lot of sequencers and synthesizers and stuff. I think it's safe to say it's on a kinda rock/pop/alternative vibe."
It took the group more than a year to make the album because "we were kind of lost for a little while," according to Richardson.
"Things were moving so fast," he said. "We have perspective now. We're all in a great place. A.J. is doing great, two and a half years sober now. Brian's got a baby boy. The batteries are recharged. We've had a chance to step back and soak it all in."
Being at the Grammy events, especially at the MusiCares tribute to Brian Wilson, where they sang "When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)," got the guys extra stoked about returning to the spotlight.
"We're anxious to get back onstage," McLean said. "[MusiCares] was just a little taste, and now it's just like, 'God, I wanna get on the road again!'"
While their album is scheduled for a summer release, the Backstreet Boys are planning a warm-up club tour to kickoff next month. So far three dates have trickled out: March 24 at the Avalon in Boston, April 1 at the NorVa in Norfolk, Virginia, and April 2 at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
